Brief Description

Cleveland Sight Center, a nonprofit agency founded in 1906, provides people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired with educational, rehabilitative, preventative, and other vision support services. Over 70% of the clients served are seniors. A variety of programs and services offered focus on offering the senior client a sense of hope and the opportunity to remain independent and actively engage in living, through instruction and support. Among the programs offered are Independent Living, Transitional Life Counseling, and Share the Vision, a community-based peer-support program. A large number of community-based support groups are also offered to clients.

  • Assessment
    • Contact us at 216-791-8118.

  • Assistive Products
    • Operates Eyedea Shop onsite and online (www.eyedeashop.com), which carries a wide selection of items, including basic magnifiers, video desktop and hand-held magnifiers (CCTV's), large print calendars, talking clocks and watches, lamps, and a variety of items to help with cooking, cleaning, sewing, and even with recreational activities--such as large print playing cards and board games. The shop is open every weekday from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

  • Braille/Electronic/Audio/Large Print Production
    • Educational materials, books, and other requested material.

  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Offers Speakers' Bureau presentations to Ophthalmologists and Optometrists, Vision Centers, Senior Centers, Assisted Living and Retirement Communities, Medical Professionals and Nursing Homes, Hospitals, Health Fairs, K-12, Colleges and Universities and volunteer groups regarding agency services including presentations on Blindness Basics for Caregivers, The Aging Eye, adaptive aids, and assistive technologies.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Provides computer training and adaptive equipment in keyboarding, browsing websites, sending and receiving emails, screen magnification software, JAWS and tablet and smartphone usage.

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Provides consultations to other schools and programs.

  • Counseling
    • Provides Visual Functioning Questionnaire assessment, offers psychosocial assessments, case management services, supportive counseling for individuals and groups, and provides information and referrals to other community services.

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in activities of daily living, adaptive communications, use of closed-circuit televisions, orientation and mobility training, college prep and vocational readiness programs.

  • Employment/Job Training
    • Provides one on one vocational assessments,counseling and consultation. Assists job seekers in pre-employment activities including resumes, interviewing skills and developing an individual employment plan and participation in job club. Works closely with job seeker to apply, interview and negotiate as a prospective candidate. Our goal is to help clients achieve competitive employment at jobs and gain independence.

    • Provides adaptive equipment; low vision evaluation with full agency services and occupational therapy. Referrals to additional community resources for other health services.

  • Health Services
    • Provides adaptive equipment; low vision evaluation with full agency services; occupational, speech, and language therapy. Offers glaucoma and amblyopia screening and referral; audiology testing; diabetic education and counseling. Refers for other health services.

  • Library Services
    • Lends new digital book players through the Ohio Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled. Provides information, referral and services such as transcription to Braille and digital recording services.

  • Low Vision Services
    • Provides low vision evaluation and follow-up, including recommendation of adaptive aids that may help maximize use of remaining vision.

  • Professional Training
    • Offers internship/fieldwork placement in low vision, orientation and mobility, rehabilitation counseling, social work, rehabilitation teaching, regular in-service training programs, open to enrollment from other agencies.

  • Reading Services
    • Provides timely access to today's in-depth news for anyone who does not have easy access to standard print materials due to vision loss or a perceptual or physical disability through the Cleveland Sight Center Network (CSCN). Newspapers and Magazines read by CSCN volunteers: The Plain Dealer, The Sun Papers, The Cleveland Jewish News, Time Magazine, New Yorker, Cleveland Magazine, and Smithsonian magazine.

  • Recreation Services
    • Offers residential summer camp for children, teens, adults, families and therapeutic recreation programming throughout the year. Therapeutic recreational activities include art and wellness programs, therapeutic fine arts programs, and leisure and adventure activities.

  • Services for Seniors
    • Over 70% of the clients served are seniors. A variety of programs and services offered focus on offering the senior client a sense of hope and the opportunity to remain independent and actively engage in living, through instruction and support. Among the programs offered are Independent Living, Transitional Life Counseling, and Share the Vision, a community-based peer-support program. A large number of community-based support groups are also offered to clients.
